What is PlayAbility Adaptive Software?
PlayAbility Adaptive Software is an adaptive control tool for Windows 10 and 11. It maps supported inputs, including face gestures, head movement, voice, keyboard, mouse, gamepads and compatible adaptive devices, to standard gamepad, keyboard and mouse actions. Keep the controls and devices that already work for you, then add the inputs you need.
How does PlayAbility work?
PlayAbility detects or receives a supported input, lets you map it to a compatible action, and sends a standard virtual gamepad, keyboard or mouse output. Its webcam tracking supports 45 face gestures plus head movement, and voice commands support 24 languages. For example, you can map a smile to the A button or head movement to a stick axis. The game must accept the output type you choose, but it does not need a PlayAbility-specific mod.

Hardware & Setup
Do I need special hardware?
Not always. PlayAbility currently requires a Windows 10 or 11 PC. You need a webcam only for face or head tracking and a microphone only for voice commands. You can also keep using compatible keyboards, mice, gamepads and adaptive devices. Console setups may require Remote Play or a compatible adapter.
Is PlayAbility easy to set up?
PlayAbility includes ready-to-use profile templates, visual configuration with no coding required, and a mapping editor for choosing triggers and actions. You can start with a template and refine one mapping at a time. Setup effort varies with the game, devices and any console connection you use.
Does PlayAbility require an internet connection?
Core local control features can work offline after the app is installed and set up. Face and head tracking and voice recognition run locally. An internet connection is used for account access, cloud profile backup and software updates.
How do I get started?
- Download PlayAbility Adaptive Software on a Windows 10 or 11 PC
- Connect the input devices you plan to use; add a webcam for face or head tracking and a microphone for voice
- Choose a profile, try it and fine-tune it if needed
- Launch your game and test the profile
Gaming & Compatibility
Does it work with all games?
PlayAbility is designed for PC games and applications that accept standard controller, keyboard or mouse input, including titles distributed through Steam, Epic Games and Xbox Game Pass. Choose an output type the game supports and test the profile with that title. Individual games, launchers or input modes can still have compatibility or configuration restrictions.
Does it work on consoles?
PlayAbility runs on Windows and connects through supported adapters or Remote Play. See the recommended setup for PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch 1 & 2.
Can I use PlayAbility outside of games?
PlayAbility can control supported Windows applications. You can:
- Move the mouse cursor with head movement or face gestures
- Use facial gestures (or assigned keys) to click, drag, and scroll
- Control your mouse with face gestures, keyboard presses, or gamepad inputs
- Navigate your desktop, browse the web, and use everyday applications
Can it replace a controller?
PlayAbility can be the primary controller input or add controls to devices you already use. It can send virtual Xbox controller, keyboard and mouse actions while combining supported face, head, voice and physical inputs. The target game and your required mappings determine how much of the controller it can cover.

Can I use PlayAbility Adaptive Software for competitive gaming?
PlayAbility translates your configured inputs into game controls; it does not add aim assistance or automate gameplay. Rules for accessibility software can still vary by game, platform, anti-cheat system and tournament. Check the current rules for the title or event before using it in competitive play.
How accurate is the tracking?
Tracking reliability depends on the camera, lighting, camera position, selected gesture and sensitivity settings. PlayAbility provides thresholds, ranges, deadzones, acceleration and detection delays so you can tune supported mappings. Test each input in your own setup and target game before relying on it.
Inputs & Triggers
What triggers can I use?
PlayAbility supports these trigger types:
- Face gestures: 45 gestures, including blinks, smiles, eyebrow raises and mouth movements. Start with gestures that are comfortable and reliably distinct.
- Head motion: turn, tilt up or down, tilt side to side, and lean forward or backward
- Head Motion Mouse: head tracking for cursor control, with acceleration and continuous mode
- Voice commands: spoken words or phrases in 24 languages
- Keyboard: physical keyboard keys
- Mouse button: left, right, middle, side buttons and scroll wheel
- Mouse motion: physical mouse movement
- Gamepad: buttons, sticks, triggers and D-pad from a physical controller
- Dwell: triggers an action when the cursor stays still
A profile can contain mappings from several trigger types. Not every trigger is compatible with every output, so the mapping editor shows the available combinations.
What actions can I output?
PlayAbility can output:
- Gamepad buttons: A, B, X, Y, shoulders, thumbsticks, back, start and guide
- D-pad: up, down, left and right
- Analog sticks: left or right stick with full analog control or digital directions
- Triggers: left and right triggers with analog pressure support
- Keyboard keys: supported letters, numbers, function keys, modifiers, special keys and key combinations
- Mouse buttons: left, right and middle click, with single- and double-click support
- Mouse scroll: scroll up or down with configurable speed
- Mouse motion: cursor control through Head Motion Mouse or compatible gamepad axes
- Settings actions: toggle outputs, calibrate head position, switch profiles and control overlays
Can I use voice commands?
Yes. Voice recognition supports 24 languages. You can map spoken words to compatible digital actions such as gamepad buttons, keyboard keys, mouse clicks or scrolling, and settings actions. Voice can work alongside face, head and physical inputs. Because a spoken word is an instant event rather than a continuous analog input, voice mappings use Short Press by default.
Can I control the mouse cursor with my head?
Yes. The Head Motion Mouse trigger controls the cursor and includes:
- Auto-compensation for distance from camera
- Separate horizontal and vertical sensitivity
- Acceleration curves
- Continuous mode for 360-degree camera control in games
What does Full Analog mean?
Full Analog means a compatible input can produce a continuous value instead of a simple on/off state. Stick axes can move progressively across their directional range, while triggers can vary from 0% to 100%. Face gestures, head movement, mouse movement and physical gamepad axes can provide progressive input for compatible mappings.
Can I use PlayAbility with adaptive switches and devices?
Compatible adaptive devices can be used when Windows or a supported connection method exposes them as a keyboard, mouse, gamepad or joystick input. This can include:
- Adaptive switches
- Joysticks
- Pedals
- Custom controllers
- The Xbox Adaptive Controller
Supported device inputs can be combined with face, head, voice and other mappings in one profile. The exact setup depends on the device and connection path.
What is the on-screen overlay?
PlayAbility includes an interactive overlay with on-screen buttons and virtual joysticks. You can:
- Click or drag overlay controls to generate inputs
- Use it standalone or combined with face, head, voice, and physical inputs
- Make it click-through so inputs pass to applications behind it
- Toggle it on/off with a mapping
Customisation
Can I customize the controls?
Yes. You can map any trigger to a compatible action, choose analog or digital behaviour, configure sensitivity thresholds and ranges, set action modes, require repeated trigger events such as a double blink, add detection delays, and create profiles for different games or uses.
What are action modes?
Action modes determine how a trigger activates an action:
- Default: active while the trigger is held
- Toggle: switches between on and off with each trigger
- Short Press: sends a 100 ms press
- Long Press: sends a 300 ms press
- Double Press: sends two quick presses
- Triple Press: sends three quick presses
For scroll actions, additional modes include Single Tick and continuous scrolling with Custom Ticks.
How do I press a combination of keys or buttons?
A mapping can send a gamepad-button combination or a keyboard shortcut such as Ctrl + C. To trigger several actions from one input, create several mappings with the same trigger. Action modes control press timing, and repeated-event rules can require two blinks within 0.5 seconds, for example.
How do I calibrate head tracking?
Use the Calibrate Head Stick settings action. This sets your current head position as the neutral centre point. Use it when:
- Head tracking drifts
- You change your seating position
- You want a new comfortable neutral position
You can map this action to a voice command, keyboard key, gamepad button or face gesture for quick access.
How can I improve my setup?
- Lighting: use stable, even lighting on your face
- Camera position: place the camera near eye level
- Start simple: begin with a few mappings and add more gradually
- Tune sensitivity: adjust thresholds for your natural movements
- Use detection delays: reduce accidental activations
- Take breaks: avoid fatigue from sustained gestures
- Recalibrate when needed: recenter head tracking after changing position

Pricing & Licensing
Is PlayAbility Adaptive Software free?
Yes. The Free Edition includes all current control features, one customizable profile and use on one Windows computer, with no credit card or time limit. Pro is optional if you need unlimited profiles or use on more computers.
What does PlayAbility Pro include?
PlayAbility Pro adds unlimited profiles, cloud sync and backups across your personal computers, and automatic profile switching. Every current control feature is already included in Free. Monthly, yearly and lifetime purchases include the same Pro features and future updates while your Pro access is active.
Is PlayAbility a subscription?
Free has no subscription or time limit. For Pro, choose a monthly or yearly subscription that you can cancel, or pay once for lifetime access. All three payment options include the same Pro features.
How many devices can I use PlayAbility on?
Free includes use on one active Windows computer. Every Pro payment option includes use on all your personal computers.
I got a new PC. How do I move PlayAbility?
Install PlayAbility on the new Windows PC and sign in with the same account. The Free Edition includes use on one computer, while Pro includes use on all your computers. Back up any profile data you want to keep before moving.
Privacy & Safety
Does PlayAbility record or share my data?
Face, head and voice processing happens locally on your device:
- PlayAbility does not store video or audio
- PlayAbility does not upload gameplay footage
Does PlayAbility use AI?
PlayAbility uses computer vision to detect facial landmarks and movement. Its core mapping system translates the inputs you configure; it does not add aim assistance or play a game for you. Optional WebSocket and MCP integrations can let external tools interact with PlayAbility only when you choose to enable and configure them.
Is PlayAbility suitable for children?
Yes, with supervision. Consider:
- Keeping sessions short
- Monitoring comfort and fatigue
- Tuning settings for gentle movements
- Using detection delays to prevent accidental triggers

Who created PlayAbility?
PlayAbility was created by Valentin Squirelo, an independent maker and developer from France. Valentin has been building accessibility projects and playful inventions since 2013. Development began in 2023 with help from his Twitch community, whose feedback still guides the project.

What is Twitch integration?
PlayAbility connects to Twitch chat through Twitchat.fr so viewers can trigger mapped inputs with chat commands. Streamers can use it for crowd play or community-assisted gameplay.
